There’s so much to love about playing pickleball, as Cheam Fields Club members are discovering. Pickleball was launched at Cheam Fields Club in 2025 and now has several social sessions running each week, with a growing and enthusiastic pickleball community.
For a multi-sports club like Cheam Fields, pickleball is highly accessible, providing a great way to mix, match and socialise with all club members. Our numbers continue to grow, under the guidance of Tennis member and Pickleball England certified activator Gemma Southam.
“Pickleball at Cheam Fields Club is bringing bowlers, tennis players and pickleballers of all ages together for competitive but friendly games with a lot of laughter on court!” she says.
The journey began in the late summer last year with temporary pickleball lines on a tennis court. As pickleball became established, and thanks to sponsorship from The Eyesmith, the Cheam-based optometrists, opticians, and contact lens experts, pickleball court lines were recently added to Court 4.
What better way to celebrate this latest milestone than a 12-hour Pickleathon on July 25. Over 75 club members, their families and friends kept the fun and games going from 9 am to 9 pm.
From first-timers, to regular players, the participants gave the event a big thumbs up, saying they’d gained a better understanding of the sport, enjoyed testing their skills, and meeting new people.
